The earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan on 12th May 2008 shattered countless families in the blink of an eye. Casualties were numerous, and the cry of the Sichuan Province moved the heart of the nation.

Many of the fortunate have started new life in the first three years after the earthquake and the shock of the disaster is fading away. However, Stand TALL has not forgotten the aftermath, especially those amputated casualties. Stand TALL has been continuously caring for the patients by providing long-term rehabilitation treatment and prosthesis installation services, as well as training up more than 1,000 rehabilitation medical staff within Sichuan Province.

Over the past ten years, Stand TALL has not faltered in patient care. We have paid visits to the Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital to follow up on the rehabilitation progress of the casualties, and to provide comprehensive treatment services. The outreach services of the medical team have been ongoing, with visits to You Ai School, Yong Chang School and Beichuan Middle School to carry out rehabilitation treatment for the patients in the area. Stand TALL has been able to gain further understanding of the needs of over 450 patients through those projects. We have thus been tailor-making treatment plans, adjusting or changing prostheses, and even arranging some patients to come to Hong Kong for orthopedic surgeries to avoid the development of stump deformation.

Simultaneously, Stand TALL has home-visited our patients to promote deeper community integration. Medical teams have assessed the living environment of the patients and designed rehabilitation training programs suitable to their residential conditions. The teams also carried out home safety assessments for casualties to provide home improvement suggestions and services in order to build a barrier-free home and to realize a more convenient lifestyle.

The patients need life-long rehabilitation treatment. This responsibility must be carried by a large number of Sichuan’s own medical experts in related field.

Since September 2010, Stand TALL has been cooperating with more parties within Sichuan Province in carrying out rehabilitation medical training courses at various levels. The increasing number of doctors, nurses and therapists will provide sufficient human resources for the Sichuan-Hong Kong Rehabilitation Center, an institution started operation in 2012 and partly funded by the HKSAR government. In July 2011, 1,770 students enrolled in the Sichuan training programme. It has utterly exceeded our goal of 1,000 attendance. Some students, either still in study or already at work, have completed the first phase of training.

Upon course completion, students will continue to learn and improve through case studies. They can then understand the needs of patients and provide appropriate services. Stand TALL uses internet not only to offer an online platform for the programme, but also to develop a website where most up-to-date rehabilitation treatment to be uploaded. Graduates from the course can continue their education via this channel which also serves to be an asset of teaching material for the tertiary institutions within Sichuan Province.

Stand TALL can only be where it is today owing to the trust, recognition and support from both Hong Kong and Mainland China over the past ten years. I would like to express my gratitude to our patients, Hong Kong residents, the Sichuan Provincial government and the HKSAR government. Stand TALL will continue to give all our care to each and every patient, and keep in close contact with the Sichuan rehabilitation experts to play our part in assisting rehabilitation industry to flourish throughout the province.
